Travel & Accommodation

We will be in a small village in the French countryside, where places to stay can be limited. To make things easy, we have reserved enough rooms for everyone and can arrange your booking–just send us a note at emsanderic@gmail.com. We would love for everyone to be nearby, but we have also included details on the surrounding towns with other options to explore.
We will have transportation covered for all events on Friday, Saturday and Sunday for those staying in the reserved accommodations. For those staying elsewhere, we will do our best to scoop you up too. More info is in the transportation section.
On the edge of La Bastide-Clairence, we have reserved this hillside hideaway for the whole weekend. The property feels like a small Basque village, with single and shared apartments and duplexes along the river. It will also be the setting for our Welcome Dinner on Friday.
Please let us know if you would like us to reserve a room for you by emailing emsanderic@gmail.com.
This village is one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France (translation: among the most beautiful in the country). Think classic red and green Basque buildings, a single main street and a river for both relaxation and adventure. It is where we will host our Welcome Dinner on Friday and where we have reserved rooms at Les Collines Iduki. From here, it is about 20 minutes to the venue and 35 minutes from the Biarritz airport.
Hasparren is one of the larger nearby towns, set at the floor of Mount Ursuya (a 2300ft / 700m elevation hike if you are in the mood). It has a good food scene, with local restaurants and markets. Important note: June 19-21 is the town festival, which fills the streets with music and celebrations late into the night (ie. 3-4 am). Keep the festivities in mind if you are looking at options. About 10 minutes to the welcome dinner, 15 to the venue and 35 from the Biarritz airport.
Further inland, about 20 minutes past our venue and an hour from the Biarritz airport, Saint-Palais is a crossroads on the Camino de Santiago, with museums and landmarks that nod to its past. It may not be the most remarkable spot in the region, but it does offer accommodations.
-
BIARRITZ
Biarritz and the surrounding seaside towns are well worth a visit if you have time on your way in or out. But since it is an hour from the venue on winding country roads (sometimes slowed by tractors, bikes and buses), we don’t recommend it as a base for the weekend.
-
We will have shuttles running all weekend to make getting around easy. They will cover the Welcome Dinner on Friday, the Celebration on Saturday, and the Brunch on Sunday. If there is interest, we will also arrange a shuttle to Biarritz after Sunday brunch.
For those staying in one of the accommodations we have set aside, you will automatically be on the route. For those elsewhere, let us know where you will be and we will do our best to get you on board. Shuttle will run in loops until the night winds down.
Each venue also has parking if you would rather drive. You are welcome to leave your car overnight if you decide to catch the shuttle back.
There are a few options to make your way to the southwest of France. Flying can be faster (especially with a connecting flight from abroad), but if you are spending time in Paris, the high-speed train (TGV) is often the easier choice. Summer travel in France fills quickly, so best to book planes or trains well ahead of time.
-
BY PLANE
-
Biarritz: BIQ is the closest local airport. There are connecting flights from Paris, London, etc. From Biarritz, it is about an hour drive to the venue and accommodations, with both rental cars and taxis available at the airport.
-
Bilbao: Across the border in Spain, BIO has plenty of flight options from major hubs (Madrid, Paris, London, etc) and both rental cars and taxis are available on arrival. The drive after you land is longer though, over two hours to the venue and accommodations.
-
-
BY TRAIN
-
Bayonne:The TGV from Paris Gare Montparnasse reaches Bayonne in about 4 hours. From the station, it is roughly a 45-minute drive to the venue and accommodations, either by rental car or taxi. Book your train here.
-
The TGV also stops at Biarritz, Saint Jean de Luz and Hendaye after Bayonne, nearby coastal towns. From those stations, it is slightly longer to the venue and accommodations.
-
-
TAXIS
-
To get from the airport or train station to the countryside, you can find Uber and taxi lines at all surrounding airports and stations (though at busy times, the wait may be a little longer than Manhattan). If you would prefer to book ahead, we have included a few local providers. We are happy to help with arrangements if the language barrier or booking process gets confusing.

CARS
-
All nearby train stations and airports offer rental cars, and there’s parking at every venue, as well as at the accommodations we have reserved. Roads in the Southwest can get a little narrow and winding once you are in the countryside, but nothing we don’t think you can handle. Just remember manual is standard, so be sure to specify an automatic if you aren’t comfortable with a stick.

We will have some things lined up, stay tuned!

-
Welcome Dinner: Stars, stripes, denim if you are feeling the Americana spirit. Totally optional.
-
Celebration: It’s a wedding (and probably not your first). We know you will bring your best look. Just keep in mind we will be outside in the country, where the grass can be soft and the temperature fickle.
-
Brunch: Pack a swimsuit if you want to take a dip.
-
A mix of both, with covered spaces just in case. Weather in the Basque region is described as 4 seasons in a single day, so it is worth checking the forecast closer to the date.
